Questions To Ask Your Architect Before Working With Them

Choosing an architect to work with is one of the crucial decisions in getting your home project complete. There are basic questions people think to ask about when looking for an architect, such as completed work and references. But to really be confident that you have made the right decision there may be a few other questions which will help you put your mind at ease with your selection. Below are some questions we see as important to ask when screening for your potential architect…

How long do you think my project will take to build?

Times can vary depending on the level of detail required for your project and whether a Town Planning Permit is required or not. A good architect should be able to review your block of land and instantly confirm if it is possible to avoid town planning as it is not required for every project. Having a timeline for your project will help you plan your budget and organize your family should you need to move out during construction.

What is your signature style?

If you and your architect are aligned with the same design principles, then creating your dream home will be an easy process. It will help the design process flow and lead to an easy and friendly client and architect relationship. If your design styles are different then you are most likely going to find it hard to achieve a design that you are happy with.

How do you bill?

There are various ways an architect charges out their work. The complexity of the project and the hours of design required are important to establishing the design fee. Getting clarity around how your architect will bill your work out to you will help you accurately plan and budget for the duration of your project.

Have you had experience with building in my area?

Each council has their own zone and design guidelines. Gaining permits and the time it takes also varies from each council. While it is not always imperative that your architect has had experience working with your region it can be helpful if they have a knowledge of how to work with your council.

It’s important to feel that you are on the same page as your architect so don’t be afraid to ask questions. Creating your perfect home is personal so you want to work with someone that you feel understands your wants and needs and you have a positive feeling towards.
